The guidance applies to all schools and colleges and is for:
- Headteachers, teachers and staff;
- Governing bodies, proprietors management committees and senior leadership teams.
It sets out the legal duties you must follow to safeguard and promote the welfare of children and young people under the age of 18 in schools and colleges.
There are a number of revisions that have been made which came into force on 2nd September 2024. A summary of these changes can be found at Annex F of the document.
Keeping Children Safe in Education uses the term “must” when the person in question is legally required to do something, and “should” when the advice set out should be followed unless there is good reason not to. It should be read alongside Working Together to Safeguard Children and your Local Safeguarding Children Partnership Procedures.
